How to Store Scratch and Peck Feeds

Storing Scratch and Peck Feeds

Organic NON GMO Chicken FeedIf you asked your animals, we bet they’d say there is nothing better than a trough of fresh Scratch and Peck to get them ready for their day. Properly storing our feeds will help ensure that the premium quality of the whole grains is retained so your animals get the best nutrition. Here are some tips on how to do just that.

With all the different climates and weather variables, there is no one recipe for keeping feeds fresh. Across the board, though, keep our feeds stored in a cool, dry place. Rain, humidity, and condensation can lead to spoiled or moldy feed. Likewise, exposure to heat and sun can lead to the natural oils in the whole grains going rancid. Keep our feeds stored out of direct light and away from moisture. Food grade bins can be a great storage solution, but be aware that temperature fluctuations may lead to condensation buildup. Regardless, keep your feeds in a covered container because you want to avoid it…

Rodents. Yes, rodents love a free meal and animal feed is no exception. Our feed bags are perfect to use as ground cover in gardens or under roosting bars for easy cleaning, but they are paper and mice will chew their way through them if given time. Storing feeds in containers or bins can help prevent rodents from finding their way into your feed and helping themselves to meals meant for your animals

Insects may also find their way into your feed bags or bins, especially in hot climates. Weevils are a common culprit and are known worldwide for their love of wheat and grains. Because the grains in our feeds are organic and therefore are not treated with any pesticides, bugs on the grains during harvest may end up in the bags. Though perhaps a little unexpected when opening a bag of feed, the little buggers are safe to feed to your animals and actually provide a little extra protein in their diet! To help prevent bugs in your storage containers, keep your bins clean and occasionally do a full rinse to wash out any old grains or fines from crevices. Make sure the bins are completely dry before refilling them with feed.

When stored properly, our Crumble and Pellets will last for six months and our Mash Feed can keep for nine months. Additionally, following the same storing methods, any of our individual Whole Grains products can last for 12 months. Become familiar with the amount of feed you need for your animals so you don’t end up with more than they can eat in that time. Get into the habit of periodically checking the containers in which you keep your feed for signs of pests, moisture, or mold. Elevate bags off the floor so they don’t get damp. We work hard to source organic grains from family farms in the U.S. and craft premium feeds for your animals. They deserve to enjoy their food at its finest.
