Make a Clean (Feed) Start in 2017

New year, new goals. This year Scratch and Peck Feeds resolves to take a stronger stance on organic outreach, including an even stronger approach to uniting with others to demand a clean food chain from start to finish. Lofty? Nah. Lofty is starting a Certified Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified animal feed company that works directly with farmers, utilizes suppliers with sustainable business practices, and requires constant vigilance to strict regulations, all for the passion of animals, people, and planet. Bringing together people to call for wholesome, organic food is simply a logical offshoot of that passion.

The food chain is intricate, from start to finish. Think of the organic bread on your table — it begins as a seed that requires clean soil, air, and water to grow, then it is sustainably harvested and milled before being mixed with other wholesome ingredients and baked into the loaf that your family enjoys. Our food has a long history even before it makes it to our plates. However, each and every one of us can help shape how that food is grown and raised, starting from day one.

Dalia, one of our wonderful (and goofy!) ambassadors.

Scratch and Peck Feeds is proud to be at the start of the food chain by making animal feeds, treats, and supplements that are free of medication, preservatives, GMO inputs, synthetic pesticides, unnecessary fillers, and overly processed ingredients. We believe that is how we can best contribute to the type of food system we want in our world, one that helps achieve our mission – Make honest, wholesome organic animal feed products with the most heartfelt regard for our planet and fellow living creatures.

With a strong commitment to organic agriculture as our foundation, 2017 will be a year we work even more closely with farmers, retailers, distributors like Azure Standard, and our customers to share information about the importance of using natural remedies to treat our animals and feeding them organic from day one.

Look for us at even more events that focus on sustainability, empowering local food systems, and organic farming. We have launched a new program with ambassadors who will allow us to be out and about in more communities and for whom we are grateful to have on board! So many great events happen around the country where we can learn, connect, and support the work of “cleaning up” the food chain.

Alongside the efforts you may already be doing – from raising chickens in an urban neighborhood to raising 100 birds and selling organic eggs to friends – we want to include you in our 2017 resolution. Here’s how you can help:

  • Tell us about upcoming homesteading or sustainable food movement events in your area. If you think they are a perfect fit for our 2017 resolution, email us so we can explore how we may be able to contribute to them.
  • Commit to purchasing one more organic food item in your home, and one less conventional item. Better yet, if you can make it or grow it yourself, go for it!
  • Resolve to educate a friend about the importance of an organic food system. Don’t feel equipped to have a conversation like that? The Organic Center has easy-to-understand resources and fact sheets that remind us how simple and beneficial going organic is.

Change happens when we see value and connect with something new, letting go of an old system or pattern we once thought worked. We value helping the world retain organic practices, whether it’s the environmental payoff of land that isn’t steeped in chemicals, the humane treatment of animals, the decline of pesticides in the foods we eat, or simply the connections we make when we talk directly with the food producers in our communities. We all benefit from a clean food chain. Let’s do this together.

Thank you, Meredith! We really like what you’re all doing at Backyard Chicken Project too. Here’s to keeping chickens (and all animals) happy and healthy, and helping spread the word about clean feed!
