Social and environmental impact transparency is a central tenet of our mission at Scratch and Peck Feeds. We believe a strong way to keep moving towards our goals of supporting animal welfare initiatives and holistic farming practices is to show you exactly what we are doing to reach these goals. Our third-party certifications help us express to retailers and customers how we serve, sustain, and support the people, animals, and land of our nationwide community.
Our certifications of USDA Certified Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, and Animal Welfare Approved are familiar to many and somewhat self-explanatory. Our Benefit Corporation Certification (B Corp) is equally important to us and, likely, not as well-known to the community.
The goal of B Corp certification is to redefine what success looks like in business. Rather than sharing the traditional business view of measuring success purely through a bottom line, B Corporations aim to define success through the triple bottom line – creating positive environmental and social impacts in addition to profit. To demonstrate our practices, the non-profit B Lab® measured our performance in four areas: governance, employees, community, and the environment.
We began the process of assessment and rigorous documentation near the end of 2015 and received our results and approval for the certification in April 2017. Out of the five main fields measured, we excelled the most in environmental impact. Other high-scoring sub-categories for Scratch and Peck Feeds included our organization’s ethics, management and communication, involvement in our local community, and our use of environmentally sound transportation, distribution, and suppliers.
While we have successfully achieved status as a Benefit Corporation, we believe in constant improvement, which is why we are currently developing goals across departments and the organization to do even better. We can’t wait to share them with you and report the impact of our work through our blog, social media, and newsletters.
