Picking the right feed for your chickens might have you feeling like you’re navigating a maze, not least of all because, for many of us, buying organic and avoiding GMOs (genetically modified organisms) out of our diets and those of our animals is a priority. Or maybe you’ve noticed those USDA Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified seals on our feed bags and aren’t exactly sure what they mean. Let’s crack into it together, so you can choose with confidence next time you’re stocking up.
USDA Certified Organic
The National Organic Program is regulated by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and is a process-based certification that requires farmers and producers to follow approved methods. GMOs are prohibited from certified organic products, which means farmers can’t grow produce from GMO seeds. All of our grains are sourced from North American farmers adhering to the standards of organic produce and our mill goes through an additional qualification inspection and process to maintain our USDA Organic certification. The organic certification prohibits the use of chemical fertilizers, synthetic substances, irradiation, sewage sludge or GMOs.
So, what does it really mean when you see that USDA Organic Seal on your chicken feed? It’s a promise that what’s inside is organic–no chemical fertilizers and synthetics, and a big yes to feed that’s 100% organic for your flock.
The Non-GMO Project Certification
The Non-GMO Project is a non-profit that offers GMO test verification and labeling. Their verification process involves traceability and testing to ensure compliance. To receive the Non-GMO Project Certification, we follow the project’s best practices and have product testing conducted at various stages of production – anywhere from the field to the mill.
