How do I transition my chickens to a new feed?
We recommend gradual feeding changes for your animals to acclimate to their new feed. Changing feed too quickly can result in digestive problems and make your chickens even more wary of change. Here are general guidelines for transitioning your flock’s feed over two weeks.
- Days 1-3: Sprinkle about 10% of new feed over 90% of current feed
- Days 4-6: Increase to 25% new and 75% current
- Days 7-9: Increase and mix feed to 50% new and 50% current
- Days 10-12: Increase to 75% new and 25% current
- Day 13-14: Increase to 90% new and 10% current
- Day 15: Switch to 100% new
If your chickens still seem hesitant, mix in a treat they love, such as Grubs, to help entice them to eat – we promise they’ll figure it out eventually!
