About Us

Diana Ambauen-Meade established Scratch and Peck Feeds in 2009 as a means to provide her own chickens with high quality whole-grain feed that was unavailable in any store.

As word got out to friends and they began referring others, more and more people expressed interest in Diana’s chicken feed — and a business was born.  In fact, the first batch of Scratch and Peck chicken feed was mixed with a borrowed cement mixer in the backyard!

Soon, demand for the feed went beyond her home capacity so the milling process was outsourced . As demand for Scratch and Peck Feeds grew, so did the dream of producing quality, whole-grain animal feed close to home, with grains grown by Washington farmers. With the help of her son, Bryon, Diana set forth to build an animal feed mill in Bellingham, WA.

What We Do

Simply put, we produce high quality nutritious feed for your animals. We buy sustainably grown grains direct from local farmers in the Northwest. All of our animal feeds are made up of whole grains or ground mash — not processed into pellets or crumbles.

Why We Do It

Our company was created because of and for people who want to be closer to their food sources — folks who understand that “you are what your animals eat”.

Unfortunately, most of the animal feeds on the market today travels thousands of miles before they reach our area (even feeds made with grains that have been grown in Washington). For us, that overly large carbon footprint is unacceptable

Our business operates on the belief that doing what’s right and making a profit aren’t mutually exclusive goals. We believe in a triple bottom line, which means that we recognize our responsibility to the Three Pillars: People, Planet, and Profit. We produce every sack of animal feed with that obligation in mind.

Although big business is most responsible for creating the unsustainable system our agricultural industry relies on, our hope is that small businesses and their devoted customers hold the key for fixing those mistakes.

Mission Statement

Scratch and Peck’s mission is to provide the highest quality animal feed to the health-conscious consumer. By buying directly from local farmers, we are supporting local economies, strengthening community-based relationships, and utilizing the sustainable business practices that form the backbone of our organization.

Vision Statement

Scratch and Peck aims to be the largest producer of locally sourced animal feed in the Northwest by 2018.
