Staying true to our core philosophy of producing only the freshest, most wholesome, organic feeds available, we do not over-process our animal feeds into pellets or use any unnatural additives or medications in our products. Pelleted feeds have become the norm in the animal feed industry because they solve the age-old problem of fine particle waste. However, the process of making pelleted feeds uses incredibly high pressure, moisture, and heat to bind ingredients together into a digestible pellet. Unfortunately, these conditions often destroy or otherwise alter the natural nutritional aspects of the feed. Because we don’t make pelleted feed, you may notice a bit of dusty powder left over in your chickens’ feeder. Try some of our feeding tips or ferment your feed to help them clean up their plate.
Our Founder and Owner, Diana Ambauen-Meade, started making her own chicken feed in 2009 because she couldn’t find a high quality, organic whole grain feed in stores. It didn’t take long for like-minded folks to find out about her natural feeds and want to be able to care for their own animals the same way. Diana was on her way to realizing her dream of making the best quality whole grain animal feeds with grains grown by local farmers.
After starting production in her own backyard with a borrowed cement mixer, Diana saw that the need for quality feeds was far greater than her current capacity. So, she and her son, Bryon Meade, teamed up to start being the change they wanted to see in the food system. They began the process of building a small animal feed mill in Bellingham, WA that has since turned into a true grassroots company helping to make a difference.
In 2012, Scratch and Peck Feeds became the first Non-GMO Project Verified animal feed manufacturer in North America and in 2013, we stepped it up to become Certified Organic, the first feed manufacturer in the nation to hold both badges. We produce organic and non-GMO feeds because we want to help lead this sustainable food movement by example.
We are a family company and our family includes everyone who wants to make honest and true choices about their food and where it comes from. We’re a kinship of people who know that we’re all connected and that “you are what your animals eat.”
We’re committed to making wise choices in how we use the resources we’ve been given so our customers can use our feeds with confidence. Every time we make a decision about our feeds and their manufacture, we think about the consequences of our actions, both now and in generations to come.
We don’t have a single minded focus on profit – we believe that doing the right thing is just as important. For our company, and our customers, we judge our success by three pillars of sustainable business: People, Planet and Profit. Every sack of feed we make has those values inside so you can feed your animals with pride.
We are dedicated to promoting sustainable farming practices, supporting local economies, and producing healthy, wholesome and clean animals feeds.
