Higher protein feeds can be a great option during the winter when your flock is foraging less or losing feathers, aka molting. Did you know feathers contain over 80% protein? It takes a lot of extra protein and energy to grow! Additional protein feeds can also be a good alternative when birds are under stress, such as during the integration of new chickens into a flock. Choosing a 16% or 18% feed depends on what works best for you and your flock.

Let’s start with understanding your flock’s natural cycle. Chickens and ducks are affected by photoperiodism – the physiological reaction to the length of day or night. Hens lay eggs when there are 14 or more hours of light each day. During fall and winter, when days are short and nights are long, hens aren’t exposed to 14 hours of natural light, so egg production naturally decreases and may temporarily stop. Some breeds may lay eggs during winter, but the number of eggs will likely be fewer. Extra protein during fall and winter may help boost egg production in some cases.

Increased access to protein is a great option when flocks have decreased access to insects and forage. Additionally, extra protein may help your flock stay warm during cold weather.

We currently offer three different 18% high protein feed options for laying flocks.

1. Organic Layer Mash 18% is a loose, whole grain feed – you can see each and every grain. It can be fed dry, moist or fermented for boosted digestibility and nutrition.

2. Organic Layer Pellets 18% is a pelletized whole grain feed with the same ingredients and nutrition as our mash feed. Pellets are served dry and are a popular option because their compact shape reduces the amount of food loss from scratching.

3. Organic Layer Mash 18% + Corn is ideal for those who prefer all the benefits of a mash feed and also want to include high energy Non-GMO corn to their flock’s diet.

We formulate Layer feed for the nutritional needs of laying hens 20 weeks and on. Layer feed has the right amount of protein for a consistent egg-laying cycle and to support beautiful plumage. Layer feed also contains calcium, crucial for hen health, and strong egg shells.

No, we do not recommend fermenting pellets.

We recommend Layer Grit and Oyster Shell. Layer Grit is appropriately sized for their age and size and helps grind their food for easy digestion. Oyster shell is to provide calcium to ensure strong healthy eggshells. We include calcium in our Layer feeds, but having extra available is always a good idea.
