Product Description

Scratch and Peck Feeds Naturally Free Organic Layer Feed 16% Protein is a Certified Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified product. While all of our products are soy-free, this product is both soy-free and corn-free.

Scratch and Peck Feeds are a special blend of cracked organic grains, organic flax meal, and select vitamins and minerals sourced from North American farms. Similar to Naturally Free Organic Starter and Grower, our Naturally Free Organic Layer Feed 16% contains an optimum level of protein for Stage Three feeding.

This Stage Three feed is appropriate for laying chickens and ducks at 20 weeks of age or when laying begins. The higher levels of calcium found in this blend help to produce stronger eggshells.

A nutritionally complete premium diet combined with fresh water, a clean coop and nesting environment, and plenty of fresh air, sunshine, and room to roam is among the most important considerations for your flock’s longterm wellbeing.

This feed is suitable for ducks, geese, and all waterfowl.

Practicing Flock Management Best Practices will give your flock the best chance for a long and healthy, happy life. During Stage Three we recommend Scratch and Peck Feeds Cluckin’ Good Layer Grit paired with Cluckin’ Good Oyster Shell and Cluckin’ Good Organic Herbs.

A nutritionally complete premium diet combined with fresh water, a clean coop and nesting environment, and plenty of fresh air, sunshine, and room to roam is among the most important considerations for your flock’s longterm wellbeing. Visit our Learning Center and refer to our Feeding Guides for advice on feeding your flock.

Your hens should be approaching their full grown size at approximately 20 weeks of age. Begin introducing Naturally Free Organic Layer 16% gradually to allow for a slow adjustment to the new feed formula. This is more important when switching from a different type of feed such as crumbles or pellets as your chickens may not immediately know how to consume a mash style feed.

Refill feeders only after all feed has been consumed (til they “clean up their plates”). Trough feeders provide the best access to our whole grain feeds. Be sure to offer fresh water, plenty of Cluckin’ Good Layer Grit and you can begin to supplement oyster shell at this age.

Feel free to continue offering Organic 3-Grain Scratch or Organic Scratch n’ Corn by tossing around their run to promote foraging (scratching and pecking) or use as a training tool!

You can also boost the nutrients by fermenting your flock’s feed. Browse our Helpful Guides for more resources on how to use our feeds to optimize your flock’s health.

Organic Wheat, Organic Barley, Organic Peas, Organic Flaxseed Meal, Ground Limestone, Fish Meal, Organic Flaxseed Oil, Vitamin and Mineral Premix

Can I feed this to my ducks, geese, or other waterfowl?
Yes! Our Layer feeds can be fed to ducks and geese and are suitable for all waterfowl.
My birds aren’t laying this time of year. Is it okay to switch to Naturally Free Organic Grower instead of Layer for winter as they don’t need the added calcium/minerals in the layer?
Yes, you can, however, we recommend sticking with Layer feeds as your birds are large enough to process the additional calcium.
How much do laying hens eat?
You can plan on a hen eating about 1/3 pound of feed every day. This amount will depend on many factors including access to free range pasture, weather and occasionally breed type.
What is the shelf life of Naturally Free Organic Layer 16%?
Unlike many pelletized feeds, our feeds are whole grain and contain no preservatives. We recommend a 9-month shelf-life.

Our chickens love Scratch and Peck and I love that it’s organic as I also love getting the eggs knowing they are eating quality food. My chickens are very healthy and I attribute it to the feed and clean living conditions for them. We don’t have a store close by that carry’s the S & P organic layer so I have to order it online. It comes super fast which is a benefit for me because at times I forget to order until we are getting low, because of the quick delivery I have never run out.

I stopped buying this using the subscription because I could buy it for cheaper by $ 6.00 a bag at my local Coastal Farm and Ranch. So buying two 25 pound bags it is $12.00 cheaper than the subscription. You would think that the subscription would save you money as it implies. So check your local feed store for a price before you buy here it may be cheaper. As for the feed. I lam very satisfied with the product. I’m giving it only 2 stars because of the subscription program.

Thank you for your feedback. Regarding pricing – our online store, like most other ecommerce purchase options have the cost of shipping bundled into the total price. The term “Free Shipping” may be better understood as “Shipping Included”. If you have a brick and mortar store available to buy our feeds that’s great! It typically is the most economical as retailers buy our products by the pallet and truckload and therefore the cost of freight is much less than say FedEx or UPS.

  3. AMY Prince (verified owner)

My girls are beautiful, healthy, and great egg producers. We have used scratch and peck since we got them as chicks. Knowing the quality of the feed going into our food source is very important to us.

  4. Pamela Herron (verified owner)

We’ve tried several feeds over the years but finally decided Scratch and Peck was by far the best! My girls love it and it’s a great choice for making fermented feed which is great. I appreciate the commitment to organic ingredients and the fact that the bag is recyclable and not plastic. Happy to be ordering directly from the company now. Your customer service people are professional and thorough!

We’re feeling the love. Thank you! We will continue to strive for sustainable without sacrificing quality.

I love this product and am so glad to have found it. I do ferment the seeds and my hens love it. Sometimes it freezes here in New England and then I just bring it in and let it defrost and bring it out again in the afternoon. I also leave f dry seeds out all the time for free feeding and, though they tend to leave over the very small seeds that I have to periodically throw out, overall they enjoy both options.
I love that I can feed healthy ecologically and safely sourced whole foods to my hens who reward me with healthy delicious eggs all through the winter.
Can’t say enough good things about this product.
    Thank you

My girls were on this food when my daughter in law had them. I kept it up and continue to use it. I am very pleased with the customer service and quality of the feed itself. The birds love it and it appears they eat all of it. I’ve had birds before and they would eat only parts of what was offered in past, ( before I even knew about this feed) It smells fresh, which is important, and egg production is excellent, even in winter. The birds and I couldn’t be happier. I will continue to use this feed for them or any other chickens in the future.

  7. Sheri Beck (verified owner)

Our 5 girls love this feed. I keep another Organic crumble available in their run all day, but they DEFINITELY prefer their Scratch & Peck feed which they get every morning. If you don’t ferment the feed, stir the feed with a small amount of water to moisten it and they’ll gobble it all up and not miss out on the nutritional smaller parts that they will avoid if I give it to them completely dry. And in the winter they get a 1/2 cup of Scratch & Peck Scratch w/ corn before bed. They LOVE it!

  8. Jenifer Sharp (verified owner)

Our lovely ladies adore Scratch and Peck. Really, there isn’t anything quite like it!

I was introduced to S&P many years ago at the Spokane Conservation District Farm and Food Expo. The next spring when I started my flock, I started them on the Grower formula and then the Layer; the hens have never had anything else. S&P earned my trust as an organic feed, and it is a plus that it is also free of corn and soy. While I do not ferment any of their feed, I supplement them with grubs (everyday in the winter, 2-3x per week the rest of the year), fresh fruit, vegetables, and greens, as well as garden pests. My hens are happy, healthy, and beautifully feathered; the eggs they produce are gorgeous with bright yellow to orange yolks. I recently signed up for a regular subscription to save a little money, and now it ships right to my door so I don’t worry that my ‘local’ farm store (a 1 hour drive one-way) will have it in stock when I need to restock.

    • Dawn Urness

We are so glad to hear your hens are happy and healthy – all it takes is a little love and good food.
Thanks for taking such good care of them!

    Won’t order again.
I have been ordering for years, and the food is good. Birds love it.

There is absolutely ZERO customer service. My order of 100 pounds of chicken food did not arrive and customer service is unable to help because they farm out order fulfillment to a third party.
I created a complaint with fedex and got nowhere. I disputed the charge, and I’m likely to get nowhere with that as well because all this third party knows is that I paid and fedex said they delivered.

There is no way for me to get in touch with this mysterious third party. All I can do is take the loss and never order again. Not on this site, not on chewy, heck if the food was available locally, I’d never buy there either.

I am not some elaborate chicken food scammer. I checked with my neighbors to see if my two large boxes were delivered there. I was home all day and Fedex never was near my house, let alone in my driveway. I didn’t receive what I paid for and I would have gladly taken another delivery or a credit. I have never had to go to the lengths of disputing a charge with any vendor.

I’ve been feeding my girls S&P ever since I got them. They thrive on this and gobble down their fermented feed. I’m so glad to have found a product that’s not just organic but also soy and corn free. Shipping is always fast and I have my order set on a monthly subscription which saves me some $ monthly.

  12. Cecile Johnson (verified owner)

I have been using S&P for over 3 years and the chickens love it! My only issue is the waste of the fines. I do ferment but I also like to give it dry to them too. They eat the grains but leave the fines. Wish there wasn’t so much of that in the feed. I have tried pelleted feed and they won’t eat it.

    • Customer Advocate (verified owner)

Hi Cecile, Chickens are very suspicious to any changes in their feed. It’s a bird thing! My chickens prefer fermented, which guarantee they are eating every bit and getting the important vitamins and minerals. That is what those fines are, so it is really important that they eat them. Even fermenting overnite helps. Feeding them dry is fine to, but you have to use tough love to train them to eat the fines if it is not their norm. A chicken will not starve itself. Mine refused for 2.5 days until they ate those fines. Once they got used to them they started eating them. The pellets were a bit of a challenge for me too. I have a mixed flock and 3 bantams, that I mention because some people think the pellets are too big, nope! I put the pellets in a clean milk jug. Cut 2 holes on two sides down low. The holes were about the size of a nickel. I hung the jug about head high from a rope, and gave it a swing. They watched it, finally the bravest of the 15, went up and started to fight it, and pecked at the holes. Feed fell, they watched her chase the feed. Once she tried it, most of them joined in, and by the end of the day the jug was empty. I did that for a few days, and once in awhile I still do it because they like to play. But they will eat pellets now out of the dish. It is hard to not give in and give them other things, but their instincts kick in. Best to you! Scratch and Peck Feeds.

  13. Angela Attia (verified owner)

The feed itself is excellent. Unfortunately the customer service is not. My subscription has failed every time. I have put in a new cc number. I have called customer service several times and left messages, I have emailed. No response. At all. I want to be billed automatically and my subscription to just ship every two weeks, but no human works for this place. No one will actually bother to make that happen. I’ve ordered it instead from amazon bc at least I know i won’t be left wondering where my feed is. While I love their feed, I can’t deal with this all the time especially when no one cares. Wish I could say better things about them, but I will probably go somewhere else.

    • Customer Advocate (verified owner)

I am sorry to see this Angela. The last email I have from you in our system is 8/10/21, after a credit card issue on 8/10/21. The order was shipped 8/11/21.
Apologies for any missed communications. Thank you for loving our feed. Best to you.

The only feed my hens receive! Scratch & Peck takes the worry out of raising chickens, because they have done the extensive legwork to ensure quality control. My hens gobble up their feed and other products. I love the versatility of the layer feed, too—they usually eat it straight out of the bag, but every now and then I will ferment or make them a warm mash for cold mornings. They gobble it up, no matter how it’s served, so none of it goes to waste. I have a steady supply of eggs no matter the season, and this is in part because Scratch & Peck keeps my hens happy!

Thank you Miriam, we are so happy you and your hens are happy! Thank you.

I’ve used Scratch and Peck for a few years, since it was first recommended by the neighbor who introduced me to the joy of chickens. I have since become convinced that eggs can provide much of the nutrition I need to stave off dementia especially if I can fee the hen’s right. So, over a basis of S&P, the girls, who live on top of a 60 x 60 foot compost pile from which they constantly feed themselves, they get additional earthworms (which inherently contain the omega 3 fat, EPA) and selected neighborhood weeds daily that have nutritive value. I believe “You are what your animals eat” and am glad to have S&P be the basis of that.

  16. Jennifer Carpenter (verified owner)

My chickens love this feed. Since I have so many I only use it as a treat and not their main grain. It would be too expensive otherwise.

    • Joni Brown (verified owner)

Thank you Jennifer. We are doing our best to be able to reach everyone who loves our feed.

My chickens love the Scratch and Peck feed, they mostly free range but I know they are getting all their nutrients with this feed to supplement their diet. I ferment the food, which is really easy to do, and add the herbs to it daily. My hens are incredibly healthy and can really tell with the quality and taste of their eggs! I got the subscription which I highly recommend, it makes it easy to have the feed delivered to my door at regular intervals so I don’t have to think about getting more when I am low or forget to get more feed.

Real easy to do. Have only had the best experience with Scratch and Peck Company. Thank you so much for your great service and excellent organic products. The proof is in the vitality and resilience of the flock. I am a Constitutional Capitalist; I expect healthy results in terms of eggs produced and in the health and well-being of my birds, who recently lost their rooster, Silver, who fought off a 70 pound Husky stray to safeguard them. They need a good feed mix to adapt to this hierarchical shift. Thanks Scratch and Peck for the help. Make a flock great again!

    • Joni Brown (verified owner)

Hi Justin- Thank you for reaching out and being a supporter of our feed. I am sure the girls were very stressed to lose Silver. Hoping you can find another super hero to guard your girls.

My two hens stopped eating their commercial crumbles for whatever reason, so I started to feed them Scratch and Peck feed. I still mix a little of their crumbles in the Scratch and Peck feed, and they wind up picking out the Scratch and Peck and leaving the crumbles. Can’t fool those girls.

    • Sandra Benton

Thank you for this nice note, Christine. It’s true! Picky peckers prefer Scratch and Peck Feeds. Cluck!Cluck!

Only the best for my girls! I have spoiled them from the start and feel great about it. I can count on the products I get from Scratch & Peck Feeds—from starter to grower to layer—and I love supporting this company. They sure seem to be doing right by their customers and employees. Thank you!

We’ve been using Scratch and Peck since we got our first chicks 4+ years ago. We’ve had fabulous results using this feed: great egg production with no heat or light supplements through winter in the northern states, amazing quality eggs, and very healthy chickens. Shell strength is also amazing. We don’t have to supplement oyster shells because the girls’ egg shells are so thick already. It’s also great to have a whole grain option with no corn or soy, which is how I found this company in the first place. A+ all around, and thanks for the amazing product!

Our chickens LOVE Scratch and Peck! We have a lot of free ranging chickens and a small fermenting operation. Our hens are happy and healthy and while egg productions slows down in the winter, our egg production is much higher during these periods compared to hens being fed a commercial feed diet. I add Cluck N Good herbs to their feed each morning, along with supplements from Fresh Eggs Daily. Our egg customers can’t say enough good things about our eggs and we consistently sell out. The price is definitely more than pelletized feed from your local feed store, but I believe much of the cost is offset with the overall health of the hens, egg production and the quality of the eggs. Not to mention, fermenting really helps the feed stretch further.
