Your hens should be approaching their full grown size at approximately 20 weeks of age. Begin introducing Naturally Free Organic Layer 16% gradually to allow for a slow adjustment to the new feed formula. This is more important when switching from a different type of feed such as crumbles or pellets as your chickens may not immediately know how to consume a mash style feed.

Refill feeders only after all feed has been consumed (til they “clean up their plates”). Trough feeders provide the best access to our whole grain feeds. Be sure to offer fresh water, plenty of Cluckin’ Good Layer Grit and you can begin to supplement oyster shell at this age.

Feel free to continue offering Organic 3-Grain Scratch or Organic Scratch n’ Corn by tossing around their run to promote foraging (scratching and pecking) or use as a training tool!

You can also boost the nutrients by fermenting your flock’s feed. Browse our Helpful Guides for more resources on how to use our feeds to optimize your flock’s health.

Can I feed this to my ducks, geese, or other waterfowl?
Yes! Our Layer feeds can be fed to ducks and geese and are suitable for all waterfowl.
My birds aren’t laying this time of year. Is it okay to switch to Naturally Free Organic Grower instead of Layer for winter as they don’t need the added calcium/minerals in the layer?
Yes, you can, however, we recommend sticking with Layer feeds as your birds are large enough to process the additional calcium.
How much do laying hens eat?
You can plan on a hen eating about 1/3 pound of feed every day. This amount will depend on many factors including access to free range pasture, weather and occasionally breed type.
What is the shelf life of Naturally Free Organic Layer 16%?
Unlike many pelletized feeds, our feeds are whole grain and contain no preservatives. We recommend a 9-month shelf-life.

My chickens LOVE this feed. And, I feel good feeding it to them knowing it is organic and contains no filler. They are happy, healthy girls, and their eggs are delicious–they lay year-round with no supplemental lighting, etc. Thank you for providing great feed and other products for my small backyard flock.

Scratch and Peck layer feed is the ONLY food I give my chickens. I love that it’s organic, and real grains, instead of processed mystery pellets, and my chickens LOVE it too! Absolutely the best chicken food to keep your flock happy and healthy!

Scratch and Peck Feeds isn’t about being the biggest, it is about feeding the creatures that sustain us in the best way possible. It is how this company started. If you have time- read about our Founder Diana, and her search to feed her chickens the best feed possible.

We’ve been using Scratch and Peck since we got our first chicks 4+ years ago. We’ve had fabulous results using this feed: great egg production with no heat or light supplements through winter in the northern states, amazing quality eggs, and very healthy chickens. Shell strength is also amazing. We don’t have to supplement oyster shells because the girls’ egg shells are so thick already. It’s also great to have a whole grain option with no corn or soy, which is how I found this company in the first place. A+ all around, and thanks for the amazing product!

  14. Coopzville (verified owner)

I have been using this feed for quite awhile now. I mix it with water and add some of the organic herbs-my girls love it! I serve it first thing in the morning, and when I go out around noon, it is all gone-no waste. My chickens are healthy and good egg layers-my family can’t wait to get their eggs! I also appreciate the shipping using FedEx-always comes quickly and not damaged!

    My girls love this corn!!

  16. diana alexander (verified owner)

I have used Scratch and Peck ever since my first batch of chicks about 3.5 years ago now! They have the most amazing eggs, orange yolks, and they have been very healthy! I must compliment you all on the fast shipping and the use of FedEx. I always get my feed in a timely fashion, and that means a lot. Thanks for the great product and customer service!

Our chickens LOVE Scratch and Peck! We have a lot of free ranging chickens and a small fermenting operation. Our hens are happy and healthy and while egg productions slows down in the winter, our egg production is much higher during these periods compared to hens being fed a commercial feed diet. I add Cluck N Good herbs to their feed each morning, along with supplements from Fresh Eggs Daily. Our egg customers can’t say enough good things about our eggs and we consistently sell out. The price is definitely more than pelletized feed from your local feed store, but I believe much of the cost is offset with the overall health of the hens, egg production and the quality of the eggs. Not to mention, fermenting really helps the feed stretch further.
